At Moonlight Ranch we know that healthy food helps make healthy people. What lots of folks don’t realize is that true food health starts in the soil.
We use a variety of animal agriculture techniques to build up soil and keep everything within the balance that nature intended. By rotating our cattle, sheep, pigs, rabbits, and chickens around the farm, our pastures are given periods of rest and periods of use, which stimulate growth in different ways. The animals naturally fertilize the ground, and eat a variety of forage, effectively working in a way that allows us to never spray or use chemical fertilizers.
The next step in healthy food is happy, healthy animals. All our animals are fed an organic diet that aligns with what they would eat in nature. There are more details on this in each product section, but the basis of it is that, regardless of species, all our animals have unlimited access to pastures and fresh forage, along with organic supplements such as kelp, Redmond salts, and conditioners.
We stay away from vaccinations and antibiotics, and never use medicated feeds. Our livestock are able to build strong immune systems by eating good food and natural supplements, and living life in the fresh air and sunshine. That, paired with keeping a closed herd and quarantining any new additions to screen for health issues keeps all our animals in peak shape.
Everyone on the ranch has a very important job. From our cats who keep pests out of the livestock feed, to the dogs who guard animals from predators or help move sheep to a new pasture, rest assured that every animal here is working, and happy to be!
Cattle, sheep, and rabbits stimulate pasture growth with fertilization, compaction, and grazing. Chickens and pigs till manure into the soil and clear new areas for grass growth. Ducks keep our creeks healthy and help our small orchard stay free of pests. Species moving across the land together and at different paces reduces the overall parasite load of the soil. Their work is truly amazing!
We love watching each critter fulfill it’s unique role in this beautiful system of farm life.
